What You Need to Know Before Adopting an Indie

If you've just made the life-changing decision to give an indie a happy home, kudos and congratulations! Indies check all the boxes when it comes to the characteristics one looks for in a pet. Not only are they intelligent, alert and protective, but they are also loving and loyal when they are properly cared for. But before you open your doors to welcome your new best friend, here are a few things we’d like you to know...

Adopting an indie off the streets:

Stray dogs are a common sight in neighbourhoods across India. You’ve probably crossed paths or even made friends with a few in your vicinity. While you may be tempted to pick a stray dog off the streets, we’d recommend reaching out to a shelter instead. This is because strays that live in communities (particularly gated societies) are often fed and well cared for by animal lovers residing there. So if you choose to adopt this way, make sure to ask the animal lovers in your community if the dog is being cared for, and seek permission from them before you take your furry friend home. Adoption legalities:

These guidelines from the Animal Welfare Board Of India (AWBI) reference Article 21 of the Constitution of India which states that anybody wanting to provide shelter to dogs is at liberty to do so.

It is important to follow the right procedure when adopting a dog from a shelter. While each shelter will have their own adoption process, you can expect to submit an adoption form with your details along with a few essential documents for proof of your identity and address. They might also ask a few questions (background check) and offer advice (counselling) on how to look after your new pet.

Registration:

Registering your pet is mandatory across India. You can get your dog registered with your local authorities or the Kennel Club Of India (KCI). Each city/state has their own set of regulations so make sure to follow the process of your respective city/state.

Caring for street dogs:

Adoption isn’t the only way to care for indies. As mentioned above, strays in gated societies are often looked after by well-meaning animal lovers in the community. You could help out too, either by joining feeders in your community or starting this initiative yourself. If you face an objection, please remember that it is legal to feed stays within or outside your society. However, make sure to keep away from public areas like footpaths, gates, causeways and busy streets.
