#1 Rajapalayam

Size: Large breed

Life expectancy: 10-12 years

Origin: Tamil Nadu

These white-coat, pink-nosed dogs are affectionate and devoted companions. They are known to be excellent guard dogs and have also been used by the Indian Army along the borders of Kashmir.

#2 Indian Spitz

Size: Medium breed

Life expectancy: 10-16 years

Presence: Pan India

This breed is very similar to the Pomeranian. Its claim to fame is the character ‘Tuffy’ from the famous movie Hum Aapke Hai Kaun. These dogs are easy to train, friendly and loyal.

#3 The Mudhol Hound

Size: Medium/large breed

Life expectancy: 10-12 years

Presence: Karnataka

These dogs have served as companions for hunting and guarding around the Deccan Plateau region for years. They can be exceptionally loyal when treated with kindness. The feathered/furry version of this breed is known as ‘Pashmi’.

#4 Jonagi

Size: Large breed

Life expectancy: 10-14 years

Presence: Andhra Pradesh

This breed is identified by their short hair that is covered with spots. They are energetic and need to be exercised daily. A fun fact about this breed is that they don’t bark, but yodel instead.

#5 Chippiparai

Size: Medium breed

Life expectancy: 14-16 years

Presence: Tamil Nadu

This breed is devoted and makes a sharp guard dog. They are great family pets, easy to groom and are known to be loyal companions. At one point, these dogs were companions to the most elite in India.

#6 Indian Pariah Dog, INDog or Desi Dog

Size: Medium breed

Life expectancy: 13-16 years

Presence: Indian subcontinent

These dogs are extremely alert and intelligent. They are territorial and defensive which makes them great guard dogs. They do well in families with children if they are well socialised. They have very few health concerns and thrive in most Indian climates.
