How to Give Pills To My Dog: 6 Easy Tips For Medication

Our furry babies, like all babies, hate taking their medicine. While some readily consume their pills with their meals, the majority needs their pawrents to be a bit creative. Here are a few tips to make it easier for you and your doggo!

Tip 1: Pill Dispensers or Pill Guns

These tools are designed to place the pill directly at the back of your dog's throat, making it easier for them to swallow. However, please note that it must only be used in the presence of a veterinarian.

Tip 2: Positive Reinforcement

After successfully giving your dog a pill, reward them with a whole lot of pets, cuddles and treats! This will create a positive association and make the experience more pleasant for your dog.

Tip 3: Pill Pockets

Pill pockets are commercially available treats that have a hole, perfectly sized to hide the pill. To prevent your fluffy baby from getting suspicious, shower them with treats before, and after giving them the medicated one.

Tip 4: Chewable Tablets

These tablets are designed to be easily chewed and consumed by dogs, eliminating the need for forceful administration or hiding the pill in food. In addition, they are formulated to be appealing to dogs, often with flavors like chicken, or bacon.

Tip 5: Mix with Food

Some medications can be crushed and mixed in with a small amount of Pedigree Wet dog food to mask the taste of the medicine. However, always check with your veterinarian before crushing any medication, as some should not be altered.

Tip 6: Visit the Vet

If all else fails, get help from your veterinarian. Successfully medicating your dog is something your vet can teach you. Request a demonstration of their technique to make consuming pills an easy and fun process for your doggo!
