Dog Ear Infections: Symptoms, Causes, and Prevention

Ear infections are one of the most common types of infections affecting dogs, especially during monsoon. It’s completely normal for small amounts of microscopic bacteria and yeast to live in a dog’s outer ear canal, but when dirt, wax, or moisture builds up - or if the ear gets irritated, these germs can grow too much and cause an infection.

• Odor (a yeasty, corn chip-like smell)
• Itching/scratching at ears
• Pain
• Shaking of the head
• Head tilt
• Discharge
• Scabs or crusting around the ear flap

What Causes Ear Infections?

The most common culprits include: 

Moisture
Swimming or bathing can trap moisture, making ears a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast.

Allergies
Food or environmental allergies can inflame the ear canal and lead to infections.

Ear Mites
Tiny parasites that cause intense itching, especially in puppies or dogs from shelters.

Excessive Hair
Some breeds grow hair inside their ear canals, which can trap debris and wax.

Prevention

To help prevent ear infections in dogs, it's important to keep their ears dry by wiping them after baths or swims. Regular cleaning is also key, especially for breeds that are more prone to infections like Cocker Spaniels, Poodles, or Basset Hounds. If your dog has excess hair in their ears, trimming it can improve airflow and reduce buildup. Finally, keep an eye out for signs of recurring infections, as they could point to underlying issues like allergies or other health conditions.
